Post op Plutie

Pluto has been sneezy and congested the last month or so, and his mucus looked so thick and green (sorry if TMI) that I kept thinking he was at the end of a cold. Coconut oil kills a wide spectrum of viruses, so I had him taking that. Also tried an antibacterial, grapefruit seed extract. The sneezing would improve slightly but always came back full strength.

This week it was time to get Otto’s liver enzymes checked, so I brought Pluto along. The vet was great, I wish we could keep her. Anyway she discovered that Pluto had abscesses on several of his teeth. His gums were receeding to the point that they almost touched his sinuses. This in turn was causing a secondary sinus infection. Poor Plutie! The vet gave him an anti-inflammatory steroid to ease the pressure. I couldn’t believe that Pluto has never shown any sign of discomfort, just some annoyance with the sneezing. We got Pluto from a rescue organization, and he was missing some teeth already, but we didn’t ask why. The vet says these rotted and fell out on their own. She also thinks Pluto is older than five.

I took him in the next morning and she extracted many teeth. One of them crumbled into her hand when she touched it. I was sad at the thought of leaving him with only a few teeth but she said he wasn’t using them anyway, that would have been way too painful. In fact, this kind of horrible scenario is apparently quite common in cats!

He’s home now, getting used to his new situation. He was quite spacey yesterday and didn’t seem to know what to do. The pain meds they gave him will wear off in a few days. But already today he seems close to normal. He licks his lips in a strange way and wants lots of petting. The vet says cats are so much more energetic after getting these things fixed.

Andrew said he would no longer call him Sneezy Magoo, now it’s Toothless Magoo. Ingrid punched him on the shoulder for this, and rightfully so IMO.

Here he is straight from the hospital, pretty out of it.
