There is something about store-bought marshmallows that gives Ing big problems. Whereas a salicylate overload will cause one day of symptoms, a few marshmallows will cause problems for over a week. And of course, smores are one if her favorite treats.
Since we’re going to be camping in Vanny for a few days, I decided I had to make my own marshmallows. To my surprise, all I needed was some gelatin, sugar, and vanilla! We tried the natural ones from Whole Foods, and while I appreciate that they did not contain artificial coloring or flavors, we did not care for the taste. And they looked exactly like a big square of tofu. Everyone at Syncrofest thought I was roasting tofu!
So we made a fun homeschool project out of it. There was measuring powders and liquids, converting cm to inches, and the chemical reactions that boil water and thicken liquids into emulsions.
They turned out good! We’ll see how well they roast tomorrow night. The best part was dreaming of all the different flavors we want to make. We have already decided that the next batch will be strawberry. I am also excited to be able to make rice treats.
